2,000 applications for one data analyst role

American tech industry is in a deep crisis.

Yesterday, we posted a job opening for a Data Analyst role at I Can Explain. In less than 20 hours, we received over 2,000 applications from US candidates.

142 of them took the extra step to send me a direct message. Two years ago, it was unimaginable to receive 142 applications for this position, but now I have as many direct messages. And many of these candidates have the relevant experience and expertise we need, though, of course, some do not.

It’s clear that a large portion of these candidates are using LinkedIn automation tools to apply to dozens (or hundreds) of job postings. But even so, the fact that more than 2,000 data analysts are mass-applying in a single day is a bad signal for the industry. However, it’s a fortunate situation for employers who now have the opportunity to select the best candidates from such a broad pool.
